The Cost of Guessing

Fail the CLP and the meter's already running.

Every stall on the permit is money and days you don't get back. Here's what's actually on the line.

Retest fees + a waiting clock

Fail the knowledge test and you're paying a retest fee and often waiting days before the DMV lets you sit again, momentum gone before you ever touch a truck.

Tuition you can't recoup

Trucking school runs $3,000–$8,000. Don't waste a tuition seat stalling on the CLP. The permit is the part you can nail for free, on your phone, tonight.

Jobs won't wait

Fleets are hiring today, and the permit is the gate to a seat behind the wheel. Every week you're not permitted is a paycheck you're not earning.

FAQ

Straight answers

Is CDL Practice Hub affiliated with FMCSA or my state DMV?+

No. CDL Practice Hub is an independent study resource. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, any state Department of Motor Vehicles or Department of Public Safety, or any driving school. We teach the standardized content most state CDL manuals are built from.

What knowledge tests will I need for my CLP?+

Every applicant takes General Knowledge. Air Brakes is required if your vehicle has air brakes, which most commercial trucks do. Class A applicants also take Combination Vehicles, plus any endorsement tests for what you intend to drive.

How many points are in the pre-trip inspection?+

A standard walkthrough covers 21 points, front to back: engine compartment, cab controls, steering play, tires and wheels, brakes, coupling system on combination vehicles, lights and reflectors, and a final air brake and in-cab check. Exact point counts vary slightly by state and examiner.

What score do I need to pass the knowledge test?+

Most states require roughly 80 percent correct, though this can vary slightly; confirm your state's exact passing score in its official CDL manual.

Do I need entry-level driver training (ELDT)?+

Since 2022, most first-time CDL applicants, and those upgrading from Class B to Class A or adding certain endorsements for the first time, must complete training from an FMCSA-registered provider before the skills test. Confirm whether this applies to your situation.
